If we live in a zero gravity environment it would be easy to apply the basic principles of decluttering since we can place an object anywhere in the three dimension room and it will stay there. Due to gravity, there are only two ways to place an object: 1.hanging it; 2.placing it on a supporting surface.
1. Hanging it
Hanging has one major advantage over supporting. Due to constant pull of gravity, a hanged object has only one unique position where the center of mass is lowest. Gravity works in our favor and make objects lined up automatically.
2.Placing it on a supporting surface
Shelves, cabinets, drawers, etc.,provide multiple layers of supporting surfaces. The supporting surface area is not limited by the size of the room. Using these furnitures, we can easily expand the supporting surface.
By hanging or placing objects on multiple layers of supporting surfaces, we take advantage of the vertical dimension of 3D space and greatly increase the storage capacity of a room.
